Case Study: RBFCU reaches production-ready Open Banking in four months with Tyk
Key results
The challenge
Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU), a large US member-owned credit union, faced security issues, inconsistent interoperability, and poor member experiences caused by third-party aggregators screen scraping its systems. Rather than wait for regulatory clarity around Open Banking (Section 1033) and FDX, RBFCU pursued an API-first strategy.
The solution
RBFCU implemented Tyk API Gateway, self-managed, for central API management including authentication, authorization, and secure exposure of APIs at scale, building FDX-compliant APIs with a small internal team.
“Tyk gives us the ability to focus on our business and value, because there's not a lot of overhead administering the product itself.”

The results, in context
RBFCU handled its FDX implementation with a focused internal team of three to four people over four to five months, reaching production while competitors spending millions on consultants had not. Development and integration that previously took months now takes weeks, if not days, and a release cadence of every month or two became multiple releases daily. The credit union manages a portfolio of 40 to 50 APIs, with 15 to 20 built internally.
