Case Study: Verifone cuts API management TCO 75% with Kong Gateway
Key results
The challenge
Verifone set out to build a unified global omnichannel payments solution spanning in-store and e-commerce operations across more than 150 countries with varying regional regulations. It had previously operated around 20 separate regional monolithic systems, each with its own API documentation standards, which added cost and complexity.
The solution
Verifone migrated to a microservices architecture with Kong Gateway Enterprise as a centralized abstraction layer to expose APIs across regions, apply authentication and rate-limiting policies, and standardize API documentation using OpenAPI. The gateway supports hybrid, multi-cloud, and on-premise deployments.
“Kong reduces our time to market thanks to its many authentication plugins available out-of-the-box.”
HLHans van LeeuwenLead Architect, Verifone
The results, in context
According to Kong's published case study, Verifone reduced the total cost of ownership of its API management by 75%. The company also reported that its development teams saved hundreds of hours per month through automated generation and maintenance of API contracts with OpenAPI and centralized monitoring of API traffic.
