Case Study: BLUME2000 SE doubles its online revenue with Aiven for Apache Kafka
Key results
The challenge
BLUME2000 SE, Germany's leading flower and plant retailer with 230 stores and a 20-year-old online business, needed to rebuild the complex in-house legacy system underpinning its online shop. The legacy system was hindering the buying experience and making it time-consuming to add new features, while competition from supermarkets and online-only florists intensified.
The solution
BLUME2000 SE re-architected its online platform around self-contained systems communicating asynchronously and selected Aiven for Apache Kafka running in Google Cloud to move data rapidly and reliably between applications, orchestrated alongside its stack via Terraform.
“Our developers can focus on innovation and delivering an awesome experience to our customers.”

The results, in context
With the new responsive and scalable system in place, BLUME2000 SE was able to double its online business during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aiven provides 99.99% uptime and near-zero downtime during maintenance. During peak events such as Valentine's Day and Mother's Day, the volume of order-related transactions increased by 400% while Aiven for Apache Kafka kept data moving rapidly between services.
